Blog Entry # 27 - A cartulary of sorts

December 23, 2011

6:30 am on the eve before Christmas Eve. Supertramp is playing through my speakers, and there's cinnamon in my coffee.

A sudden urge to do something "new" to my blog hits me, and I have to get it all out on paper (figuratively) before actually doing it.What I want to do is basically create an "archives" section, as I noticed that my main page is starting to get a little long to scroll all the way through.
While I find it to be visually impressive, I have to be thinking about optimization with it. Not everyone has the luxury of having a 23Mbps connection, and my theory of design is to cater to the lowest common demoninator.
Basically, I'm thinking that I'll divide the "archives" section by year rather than month/year. This isn't going to be a massive project to do, but I think I'm going to have leave the current year and the previous year out of the "archives" section so as to not make the main page too short.
This means that I'm only going to have sections for 2008, 2009 and 2010 right away, but I won't be starting this until after the New Year is upon us. Reason for the delay is that I'm flying home to the family Christmas Day and won't be back until the 29th, then I work every day until the 3rd (yes, both NYE and NYD).
I'm thinking the "archives" will sit in an entry box at the bottom of my main page with a grid-type layout. The year will be "defined" by a simple image, probably a slightly whited-out landscape picture with the year in the middle of it which you can click through to get into that years' archives. There will also be a new navigation category incorporating this as well, most likely under the "Reviews" category.
Three years later and I'm still trying to improve on this website in terms of functionality. I love this place far too much to leave it as it is.
