Kannagi - Crazy Shrine Maidens

January 7, 2008

Type: TV series - 13 Episodes
Genre: Drama, Romantic comedy

Plot Synopsis
Nagi is a goddess who wakes up after years of slumber with Jin's unexpected help. Her mission as a deity is to cleanse the impurities of the world, but as her powers have weakened over time due to her sacred tree being cut down, her body is easily harmed by them. She ends up having to do it with the help of Jin and brandishing an improvised exorcist staff created using a magical girl-themed toy baton.

Story (8/10)
I thought the story was a little lacking until the last 5 episodes (well past the halfway point). But once it kicked in, it went full steam ahead and really picked up.

Characters (7/10)
The main characters were really flushed out, but the supporting characters seemed really one-sided and almost non-existant except to bring a small piece of the story in. I would have liked to have seen more interactions with the Art Club, and other students, as well as the teachers. Sadly though, it was more about Jin, Zange, Nagi and Tsugumi.

Art/animation (8/10)
It was definitely a different style from what I'm used to watching, but it was still well done. There were a couple parts that seemed a little odd, like hair movements and facial expressions that looked like they could have used a bit more work though.

Voice acting, music (7/10)
Decent, nothing really stood out, except Zange's voice acting was really well done. Can't really complain about anything though. pretty solid with the audio.

Overall (8/10)
I liked it a lot, but mainly because of the hilarity of a lot of stuff in the show. For it being a romance, it sure didn't show itself until the last 5 or 6 episodes. I don't know if I would watch this show again, unless I was looking for some funny scenes to re-watch.
