Sable & Rosenfeld's Hickory-Whiskey Tipsy BBQ Sauce

March 9, 2010

My first victim on the chopping block is Sable & Rosenfeld's Hickory-Whiskey Tipsy BBQ Sauce on am Australian Lamb Leg roast.

Information: Voted #1 by Detroit News, this unique thick and rich BBQ Sauce turns ordinary chicken, pork, beef or seafood into extraordinary!

So it doesn't say anything about Lamb, but it was still damn tasty.

Price: 4/10
At $7.99 for a 340mL bottle, I'd say it's above average in price. Then again, I did buy it at Urban Fare, so if I can find it cheaper somewhere, I will post it up.

Presentation: 6/10
Plain round bottle with a wide neck. The only part that really sets it apart is the picture on the label. It's a brown label with black writing, but featuring a picture of an old cabin. This instantly makes you think this recipe has been perfected by hunters over YEARS out in the woods and will really give you that natural woodsy flavor.

Smell: 6/10
VERY strong hickory smell, which may be somewhat offsetting if you're not a fan of it. The smell doesn't really waft through your apartment when it's cooking though, which is a slight drawback in my books. I want my neighbors to think "Hot-damn, that guy's supper sure smells good."

Color: 6/10
Generic BBQ Sauce brown, but a bit on the lighter side, closer to a really dark red.

Consistency before cooked: 7/10
I like a nice thick sauce and this one delivers. At room temperature, it flows nicely, but after it's been refrigerated, it's about twice as thick as ketchup.

Consistency after cooked: 8/10
No melting, no dripping, no sweating, nothing. If anything, it dried out and baked into the meat, which is amazing in my books. No fears of it dripping off a steak when you flip it.

Flavor: 7/10
Nice strong hickory flavor, semi-sweet, not too overpowering.

Total: 44/70

Revisiting this BBQ Sauce brought me to slathering it over half of a pork tenderloin, baked in my toaster-oven for 30 minutes at 350 (I didn't pre-heat it, so it's really closer to like 25 minutes at 350).
I noticed a slight spiciness that I didn't taste before when it was on the lamb. I'm not sure why it would be more apparent on pork than lamb, but hey, it gets an extra point in the flavor category for that!

Sable & Rosenfeld's Hickory-Whiskey Tipsy BBQ Sauce:
Red Meat - 44/70
White Meat - 45/70
Fish - 0/70

Side note: This was written on February 24th at 2:02 AM. I just hadn't published it until now.
Side note 2: I added in a White Meat value for having it on the pork tenderloin. As I said in the description, the extra point goes in the Flavor area.
